Snider mk 5 and 6

Official weight and dimensions (from List of Changes):

  • Weight: 480 gn (31.1 g)
  • Diameter: 0.573 in (14.5 mm)
  • Length: 1.040 in (26.4 mm)

Snider mk 5 and 6, unfired

  • Weight (with partial nose plug): 470 gn (30.4 g)
  • Diameter: 0.572 in (14.5 mm)
  • Length: 1.039 in (26.4 mm)

This mark 5 and 6 cartridge bullet shows clearly the knurled saw-tooth cannelures, for better retention of the lubricant. The nose plug is just visible on the cavivty and the clay base plug is flush with the base cavity rim.

Snider mark 5 and 6, unfired

  • Weight: 436 gn (28..2 g)
  • Diameter: 0.561 in (14.2 mm)
  • Length: 1.004 in (25.5 mm)

Another unfired mark 5 or 6 cartridge bullet, this time showing saw-tooth cannelures that are a little more rounded.

Mark 5 or 6 cartridge bullet

  • Weight: 480 gn (31.1 g)
  • Diameter: 0.586 in (14.8 mm)
  • Length: 1.008 in (25.6 mm)

This fired example shows that the Snider rifling often leaves a very light touch, with barely any sign of the engraving by the lands on the bullet at all.
