Snider mk 1 and 2

Official weight and dimensions (from List of Changes):

  • Weight: 525 gn (34 g)
  • Diameter: 0.573 in (14.5 mm)
  • Length: 1.120 in (28.4 mm)

Snider mk 1 and 2, unfired

  • Weight (without nose plug): 510 gn (33 g)
  • Diameter: 0.571 in (14.5 mm)
  • Length: 1.106 in (28.1 mm)

This example of a mk1/2 Snider bullet is archeologically recovered, but unfired – note the clay plug remains flush with the base. The wooden nose plug has decayed, with only a small amount remaining in the bottom of the cavity.

Snider mark 1 amd 2, fired

  • Weight: 512 gn (33.2 g)
  • Diameter: 0.606 in (15.4 mm)
  • Length: 1.085 in (27.5 mm)

The rounded and knurled cannelures can just be seen on this fired example.

The plug has moved 0.182 in (4.6 mm) into the cavity, a great distance by normal standards.
